Shirt-tastic idea

I've noticed that Cambodia do not have a football shirt sponsorship deal, a very lucrative avenue of much-needed revenue for club teams and national sides the world over. I'm a little surprised that some of the cash-rich businesses or big movers and shakers haven't muscled in and got their logo emblazoned onto the Cambodia jersey for a bargain price - where are Sokha, CamboSix or Number One when you need them - especially as it is seen on the international stage, whether it be through television coverage of the asean competitions the country takes part in or in World Cup qualification, or on my blog! Whilst club teams in Cambodia like Phnom Penh Crown have a company logo on their shirts, the national team has nothing. I'm sure it's not for the want of trying by the football federation here. However, a recent shirt sponsorship deal announced by Vietnam for example, shows the value it can be worth. Nike are providing $5 million over 5 years whilst others like Boss Paint and Yamaha have paid around $120,000 each to have their name on the shirt for 1 year. I know Vietnam have just won the Suzuki Cup so they have some kudos but still, not sums to turn your nose up to by any national federation. In the upper strata of shirt deals, England for example have a $350 million deal with Umbro over ten years but I don't fancy Cambodia's chances of securing such a money-spinner. Nevertheless, it would be good for the federation if a shirt sponsor could be found and the money injected back into the international football team - but that's about as likely as me flying to the moon, on the back of a winged moto. It ain't going to happen. So in the meantime, I suggest the Cambodia - Kingdom of Wonder logo is emblazoned on the front of the national team's jerseys so that football and the country's tourism industry avail themselves of a marriage of convenience. I reckon that would be a neat combination. What say you?

Andy, good observation for Cambodia. I think due to many years of civil conflict and international isolation and so on, cambodia needs a lot of fresh ideas and concept and encouragement as many local people seem to lack of advertisement and marketing skill which everyone who traveled the world and exposed to the world outside of Cambodia are familiar with. Perhaps everyone can help Khmer people to do these things as it is good for advertising and would bring attention and recognition for them the world over. I think it was just the lack of outside concept; so everyone can help to change that by encouraging the locals and teaching and educating more local people to do like the rest of the world out there. I thought I just encourage everyone to help make a lasting differences so Cambodia can become an enjoyable place for all. Thank you.

That would be a logo sponsor as fast as you can think about it if there were sponsors who want to do it. I mean, just look at all the endorsement and all these new events happening since the current administration took office. Do you think it just happens without anyone eliciting or initiating anything? I'm sure there is some untapped sources but there is only so much you can get from sponsors when your team ain't doing that good you know?

Take that from someone who has a few inside scoops lol. Plus, it's all about connection and networking too to get to sponsors. You can't just email Nike and ask them to sponsor you. It's what your team can do in promoting their company and who you know to the money source. In the meanwhile, it's always welcoming to spread ideas to improve the team.

Andy, great blog. I have become your blog's regular reader ;)

From my vague memory, Cambodian national football team used to have quite a few sponsors many years back, ranging from big local companies to Adidas. Yet, I was still a kid and not sure if Adidas was just a shirt sponsor or full fledged sponsor. And such sponsorship was eventually terminated to some unknown "technical" problems (sic!)

Again, great blog with interesting ideas...tourism industry may now play some sponsoring role for the national football team.

Thanks for your comments.
I fully appreciate that sponsors aren't falling over themselves to throw money at the Cambodia football team in this time of economic recession around the globe, but its certainly one way of generating revenue, and increasing the profile of the sponsor.
Instead of buying a couple of new Lexus or suchlike for family members, would one of the monied Ayadom (this translates as Excellency) here like to redirect it towards the national football team? Just a thought.

Yes, Andy I couldn't agree more. If you are correct in your assessment that no one will likely sponsor the team then the kingdom of wonder logo would do quite nicely.

Coincidentally, on the subject of sponsorship, Bangladesh today announced a deal with Nokia, the world's leading mobile manufacturer, who will sponsor their national team as well as be a youth development partner for one year. If my currency converting is correct the 1 Crore Taka deal is worth about US$145,000.
Can Cambodia have a piece of that action too please, Nokia is very popular over here as well...even I've got one.
