Crime does pay

Here's hoping for a Vietnam success in Thursday's football final
The bad boys of Malaysia have turned the form book on its head by reaching the SEA Games men's football final on Thursday and can say with a snigger, 'crime does pay.' Personally I'd like to wipe that smug look off their face but some might say its sour grapes. Not really, I just don't like to see people getting away with murder and then going onto be winners, or in this case, silver medalists as I hope Vietnam stuff them good and proper in the final. Cambodia were never going to get to the semis, their group was far too difficult and with both finalists coming from it, that's been proven. But Malaysia deserved the book thrown at them for their disgraceful behaviour towards the match officials when they lost to Vietnam in the group match between the two sides. They got off very lightly with just two players getting suspensions for man-handling the Korean referee, verbally assaulting him, throwing water bottles at the officials and all round gutter behaviour. One player was also accused by the referee of punching him but the disciplinary committee felt the case was unproven, which means they chickened out of that one as it would've probably meant a life ban on the player and the SEA Games is all about comradeship, not pointing fingers. Even their team officials couldn't help but complain that the referee incited their team. Give me strength. They were an indisciplined rabble and their officials are no better. As it was, Malaysia lived to play another day and caused the upset of the SEA Games when they beat Thailand in injury time of their final group match, to progress to the semis. Now no-one in Vientiane wanted the Thais to get through but on 2nd thoughts, I wish they'd battered the Malays, but they didn't and Malaysia spanked the behind of the plucky hosts, Laos in tonight's semi-final, winning 3-1 in front of 23,000 screaming Laotians, all hoping for a fairytale success. Vietnam, who will undoubtedly win the football gold medal to placate their success-hungry fans, put paid to the moneybags of Singapore, 4-1, in the other semi-final tonight. I'm hoping for a six-nil drubbing of the Malaysians by the speedy gonzales's of Vietnam just to put them firmly in their place.

Now that Vietnam lost to 'Gangsta' Malaysia as claimed by you, what say you?Did Malaysia 'assault' Vietnam too hard?6-0...in your dream mister..

Should watched the group game (Malaysia v Vietnam) again..and try to pay more attention on the referee's decision rather that your hatred towards Malaysian players..

peace..

Vietnam were the best footballing team in the SEA Games full stop. Malaysia should've been kicked out for attacking the referee. yes I was at the match, I saw the game and there is NEVER any excuse to attack a referee like Malaysia did. End of discussion really. Unfortunately the disciplinary committee didn't have the balls to dismiss the team and you caught Vietnam on an off day. I have no hatred at all, I am neutral when it comes to the other teams, but Malaysia should've been thrown out. full stop.

Vietnam were the best footballing team in the SEA Games???
they scored a last-minute penalty on the 90th minute to seal a 1-1 draw against thailand. they were desperate and the they dived in the box. in group match against malaysia, they did it again.

in case if you don't know the rule, there's no FIFA rule that say the team should be dismissed from the competition because of players assault the ref.

IMO, teams who boycott the game is far worse.

referring back to the topic, atleast 4-5 players of Malaysia was suspended 2-3 games because of their action

please do some revision

What's wrong with U,pal!the players already served their punishment at the end & I dun't understand why U insisted that one whole team must get punish for that..
However, at the end of the day, your pray seems didn't come true and Malaysia bagged the GOLD..while Vietnam came out as No 2.fullstop.End of the story.just wait the SEA GAMES 2011 and U wish might be granted during that period..

wow Malaysia has finally woken up about a week after the event!
I deleted a few comments that were inflammatory and posted the others that were fairly benign.
2 players were suspended, the 8 who was sent off, for 2 games and the keeper for 1 game. I personally witnessed no 8 throw a full bottle of water at the back of the 4th official in such a cowardly act that he should be banned for at least 12 months.
I also know that the referee filed in his report that another player punched him in the stomach, but the authorities were so frightened of the consequences, they said that case was unproven.
There is simply no defense for such actions, whatever you thought of the referee. He is in charge of the match. You act like hooligans and you should be suspended from the competition. It wasn't just 1 player, it was EVERY player in the team who verbally insulted the ref and some did a lot worse.
I was there, I saw it, I was near the touchline....were any of these Malay fans as close as that....you cannot dispute the truth.
Yes Malaysia won the gold medal but I will never forget the disgraceful scenes that I witnessed after they lost in the 1st game against Vietnam.

just please admit that Malaysia is the best during the 2009 SEA Games.

all player made mistakes. even some player scored by hand and attacks referee. take Henry and Drogba as an example. you said you try to be fair but from what i can see, you are a bit bias. so please stop all this nonsense and admit Malaysia is the best during the 2009 SEA Games

andy, if there's such a rule in FIFA law, please tell me.

dont judge by your personal point of view. it's bias.

the ref was poor..extremely poor.
same goes to the player and i admit it. the players were banned.

and if you talk how disgraceful malaysia is, then u shud watch how disgraceful vietnamese players during merdeka cup 2008. they did nothing wrong againts the ref or the players, but they show their worth by one of the worst not-sportmanship-show of football on earth. i bet you can ask RTM (Radio Televisyen Malaysia) for the video of the match.

I really hope that the writer have done a revision before writing this piece of ignorant piece of mind. For your dearest information, 4-5 Malaysian player has been suspended including Amirul hadi Zainal that has been suspended for THREE matches including the final match.

You will never have the right to call someone as a gangsta. In the final match, the Vietnamese is the one that did more fault including the high stud that hit one of the Malaysian player. Did he get a card? NO!! And the Malaysian did not even react to that. If I do it to you will you react to that?

The vietnamese need a penalty goal to draw with Thailand and when we watch back the replay, cleary show that the "soft" vietnamese diving. Is that we call the best team in Asean?

Lastly....
The one who deserve to win will win..
You can say as many as you like, you can swear as much as you can but at the end of the days the MALAYSIAN is the champion in SEA games....
Adios.....

I can only speak about what I saw at very close quarters. I was in the players tunnel at the end of the game as the players left the field and witnessed the scenes from a matter of yards away. The Malay no 8 was completely out of control and I was very disappointed at the lack of control by the Malay team officials over the players. All in all it was a complete disgrace and was nothing to do with football. It was gutter behaviour of the hooligan variety. I am very surprised the police did not step in and arrest the players who were throwing water bottles - the police were next to me in the tunnel but stood by and watched the scenes in disbelief. This is not fiction, this is what happened and if any Malay fan thinks there team should be allowed to get away with this behaviour, then they are not a fan of football.
The disciplinary committee that presided over the event simply chose the easy way out. FIFA rules or not, scenes like that deserve a ban of the whole team. That is my honest, and neutral, opinion. I have no axe to grind where Malaysian football is concerned.

I should leave you in no doubt where I am from: I was born and bred in the home of football, in England. I have played and watched football all my life. I now live in Cambodia and covered the SEA Games as a sports reporter with the Phnom Penh Post.
I hope that's clear enough.
I comment only from what I witnessed at the SEA Games. The history of asian football has no bearing on this.

Hey Kiddo..
I don't care whether U are an Englishman, American, Australian, Cambodian, Singaporean or even a Vietnamese..
I'm also a journalist from a Malaysian newspaper called "The Malay Mail"..just wanna say that U shud' get the facts right...
I admitted that during that match Malaysian player some disciplinary offences and those players already got served..
However, it's not right for you to claimed the Malaysian players as "gangsta" and moreover if you watch the Viets against the Thais, it clearly for me, a dive from the Viets enabled them to get a penalty to leveled the score..
U know in football, a diver have been labeled as cheater/liar so do we need a cheater or a liar inside the pitch..no right..
Somemore, my advice is U should make a better studies and revision on ASEAN football (especially Malaysian football!!)first rather than criticize..
Try to know/analyze the team first.I know a lots of people out there still skepticism on Malaysian football but for me, this young local lads are in the right track move to the higher level.
WE DON'T NEED ANY NATURALISED CITIZENS IN OUR TEAM TO IMPROVE THE STANDARD & QUALITY OF OUR FOOTBALL.
WE STILL BELIEVE WITH OUR OWN LOCAL TALENTS..

Cheers!!!

EyeZart,
If you are a journo then I feel very sad for your newspaper. You obviously have no sensible idea about how football should be played. Its a game between grown men but when those men overstep the mark, as Malaysia did, they need to be punished. There is absolutely NO excuse for what they did. Its as plain as the nose on your face. Once you allow teams to intimidate the referee then everything goes down the pan.
I never once said that the Malays were gangstas, I've no idea where that word came from. I said they acted like hooligans at the final whistle and their behaviour was simply not acceptable on a football field.
I'm now very bored with the constant refusal of the Malays on here to accept that their team was a disgrace. No more comments will be uploaded, as you obviously cannot accept neutral criticism of any sort. That is very very sad.

Dear Andy,

Im a malaysian, and yes i do believe what they did after, during and before the final whistle was wrong. In reference to reacting and harassing the referee. And yes clearly, they were punished with suspensions and so. But i somehow see that u seem to have developed a certain level of hatred on the Malaysian players based on one particular incident. Which i think is rather inappropriate being u....as a reporter..

And yes, i admit u might have watched it from a nearer point of view but still i do believe that u should have not judged the Malaysians based on one game.

Forgive my fellow malaysians for their posts, referring to those that you have deleted. which you have found rather offensive. Which were posted because of the bad refereeing decisions made. Not by the players reactions to the bad decisions.

As mentioned by Roy Keane after he saw the infamous Thierry Henry decision whereby he said decisions like this happen all the time, players cheat, referees make bad decisions and etc. But u have to learn to take it by the chin.

And they got over it, by beating the Thais, beating the hosts nation LAOS and finally playing their hearts out by beating the Vietnamese.

-Peace-
Corteo

p/s - We would not want to be known as Malays only. Thats a certain race in our country(MELAYU). We do have other races like the chinese and indians in the team where we practice the 1Malaysia concept. Malaysians as one. TQ dear Andy!
