Faces in the forest

The south face of Prasat Samnang Tasok with its bewitching smile
This week I will bring you the pictures from my recent visit to the temple complex of Banteay Chhmar in northwestern Cambodia. Banteay Chhmar is one of my favourite locations, so staying overnight in a luxury safari tent, inches from the moat surrounding the western satellite temple of Prasat Samnang Tasok, waking up to the sounds of early morning birdcalls and cicadas, was exactly what the doctor ordered. More from my Banteay Chhmar adventures later this week.

Andy,
do you have any tips on the whereabouts of Al Rockoff, the noted war photographer superbly portrayed by John Malkovich in Killing Fields? I've recently seen some pictures he took during the fall of PP on April 17, 1975 and thought them remarkable - a boy-guerrila holding an M16 rifle bigger than himself, two soldiers carrying an amputated hand on a stretcher! Know of some book collecting his pictures? Thanks for any info and great blog - Billy Andrade

Hi Billy,
yes I have seen Al Rockoff around Phnom Penh quite frequently, and as recently as 2 weeks ago he was at Meta House for one of my film screenings. I also saw him having a drink at the FCC on the riverfront about a month ago - I'm told he is a frequent visitor there. I'm sure if you want to meet up with him, a few queries around town will turn him up without much of a problem.
And as with most photographers, I'm sure there's a book of his pictures in the wings, waiting to be published.

Thank you, very much, Andy. Don't you think an interview with Rockoff wd be great in your blog?

Just in case, and if I respectfully might suggest, I could help you researching and preparing the interview, pointing links, suggesting questions etc through email. - Billy

Hi Billy,
yes it would be nice but I don't think he would welcome a request for an interview from me. He's done them before as you might expect, being an old hand here in PPenh, and as I don't have anything new to ask him, I'm not sure an interview would do either of us any good.
Sorry not to give you the answer you are looking for.
Andy
