An unguarded moment

Hello Darling... at 4FACES gallery in Siem Reap. photo courtesy of ericdevries
I don't think I will be able to get up to Siem Reap in the next few weeks to see the latest photographic exhibition at 4FACES by the gallery owner himself, Eric de Vries. Damn. We've been pals for a while now and I'm pleased that things are are on the up with the opening of his cafe-bar-gallery, a block away from Pub Street in Siem Reap, whilst at the same time taking on the responsibilities of fatherhood with the arrival of C'moon. He's also showing part 1 of his Hello Darling... exhibition throughout July that focuses on the girlybars in and around 104 and 136 streets in Phnom Penh. One of the exhibition photos was taken in an unguarded moment during a visit to one of the bars we made together purely in the interests of researching the background to the story you understand. As it's the first time I've been in an exhibition to my knowledge, I will take a small crumb of comfort from that. You can read more about the forgettable incident here. There's also talk of Eric having an exhibition at Raffles' Grand Hotel d'Angkor in October, so even more good news. Link: 4FACES.
I drop my guard for a few seconds and look what happens. photo courtesy of ericdevries

A moment of weakness forever captured on film. It will never happen again. I would be devastated if our favourite peanut seller ever saw the photo, she would never sell me another peanut.

Dear Shirley,
not sure where you got your information, but its very wrong. Sophoin is one of my very best friends but we are not romantically linked, before, now or in the future. We have too good a friendship without having to complicate matters.

Yes, we all can see why Sophoin (excuse me for the wording, but theres no better way to state this) "dumped" you... after such a profane exposure... but I have inside information you two are having a secret affair and your flat denial only confirms my suspicions --- PIQUANT TONGUE

Hi Shirley, the hard info I have on this is that they were already engaged when Andy got caught by de Vries' camera and Sophoin said enough was enough. In the meantime, he had a hard time trying to convince her to adopt more open, Western liberated women's views on the subject and, as far as I and some job colleagues of both can say, has succeeded to a degree. They have resumed their affair, on condition (posed by her) that it doesn´t go public, as a kind of "probation time" for him. Since then, he's behaving on proper terms and she's apparently swallowed the "pill of liberation" (much to the chagrin of her many admirers), a smart move by him in anyway you can judge (playing on the cultural fault line), to the point he now feels at ease in indulging again in self-exposure, having re-posted the scandalous picture for all to see. Some friends privy to their relation said Sophoin was mistified by all the attention and courting towards her when both appeared at the opening of de Vries' current exhibition in Siem Reap. She just feels herself the center of the world... She now finds everything thats happened very funny and left behind her former composure of serenity, restraint and balance, very Asian... To sum up, he isn't by no means an "angel of innocence", as he tries to convey readers of his blog time and again. --- Hanu Men's Prying Eyes Only, "Tamara"

You girls need to get out more, your warped minds are reflecting badly on the female fraternity. I've no idea what planet you have come from but you are way off the richter scale with your inane babble (which I had a chuckle to too).
The situation is exactly as I stated above. Believe it or not. We are best friends, full stop. It is possible to have females as best friends. How more flatly can I make my denial?
And of course I'm an angel...aren't all men?

Hi Andy,
I'm chuckling too, just can't believe there are people with such a talent for bantering and gossiping like Shirley and Tamara! What a fertile imagination! - Sarah Compton

I've just dropped by 4FACES today and met Eric there. Well - just for the record - he said Sophoin insistently pressed him to crop the original frame of the picture and let Andy's face out, so that he couldn't be identified by viewers and exhibition visitors. Indeed, he said, she made quite a scene on that. However delirious Tamara's post might seem, I cannot refrain from thinking where theres smoke, theres fire... - Shirley

neither you nor Sophoin were present at the opening of HELLO DARLING a few days ago. I was kind of puzzled on reading Tamara's post, just hope I haven't screwed up things between you and Sophoin.

Hi Sarah, a sensible mind in a sea of madness...
I'm gob-smacked that anyone would want to invent such fantasy, but I do enjoy a bout of banter so I'll take it with good grace.
Eric will be in PPenh today so I'll chat to him about any deranged women who've been talking to him recently. I'm sure he sees lots (deranged women) in Siem Reap (all that sun and the templed-out crowd) but I can categorically state I was NOT at the opening of the Hello Darling exhibition. More's the pity.

GOSSIP,GOSSIP,GOSSIP... In a way I like that. But FOR THE RECORD I really can't remember talking to you, Shirley/Annette/Anabelle/Mimi...., about that picture. So where is all that nonsense come from, huh? Must have been the free wine that evening..., or jealous maybe you didn't' have a chance to open Andy's shirt after all...

Let us acknowledge it was a brilliant woven fantasy, gossip or whatever... Must have some grain of truth in it, to have elicited so many categorical denials (some in capitals), otherwise you wdn't have bothered to reply... - Lucien, Naga Guesthouse/SIEM RÉAP

WHAT A DEADPAN YOU ARE, ERIC, denying we met at 4FACES and spoke about Sophoin's outrage when she learned you were going to exhibit the picture again! WHY THEN DID YOU CROP IT, MAN? HUH? If you yourself told me (verbatim) it was "a sort of compromise solution"...Thats the evidence you and Andy have avoided in your cascade of candour and carefully worded denials... But its all in the game, I understand you're part of the cover-up - SHIRLEY

Guys, guys....you need to get from behind the pc and back out to the temples to fix your concentration on something far more interesting than my imaginary love life. I never thought that when Eric snapped me in a moment of weakness that it would generate such interest out there. But now that it has, please refrain from involving innocent parties like Sophoin in your imaginary tales. It simply ain't fair on her as she has no right to reply.

Absolutely right, Andy!

Just came back from a trip to one of the floating villages on Tonle Sap and that's better than respond to rumours and gossip...

And yes, some people got to get out a little bit more.
